The MACPA Foundation provides scholarships to students in Maryland who have chosen the CPA career path. Award amounts are based on need and student achievement. A 3.0 GPA is required and must be maintained. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident. They must have completed introductory Accounting courses by the time of the award. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program that will allow them to achieve the accounting concentration required to sit for the CPA Exam in Maryland. The purpose of the Edward T. and Mary A. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program is to provide student financial assistance to certain individuals due to their eligible military or public safety service or due to their eligible family or marital relationship to such an individual. Veterans, daughters and spouses of veterans, retired or killed state or local public safety employee or volunteer and their children or spouses, POWs, families of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks who died as a result of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the attack on the Pentagon in Virginia, or the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania are eligible to apply. The complete conditions or military or public service connection that applicants must meet to be eligible for this scholarship is available on the scholarship's website. Applicants must enroll at a college or university as a degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate, or professional student; or be enrolled in a 2-year terminal certificate program in which the coursework is acceptable for transfer credit for an accredited baccalaureate program in an eligible institution; or be enrolled in a private career school. The scholarship is open to current high school seniors as well. All majors are eligible. New and renewal applicants to the program must contact their higher education institution's financial aid office for application instructions. Do not submit any applications or documents to the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA). The Charles W. Riley Firefighter and Ambulance and Rescue Squad Member Scholarship Program encourages members of the fire-fighting, ambulance, and rescue organizations serving Maryland communities to pursue credited courses that lead to a degree in fire service technology, emergency medical technology, fire service management, or public safety administration with a minor or concentration in fire service technology or fire service management. Applicants must be a Maryland resident. If the applicant is a dependent student, their parent must also be a Maryland resident. Applicants must be actively engaged as a career firefighter or ambulance or rescue squad member in an organized fire department or ambulance or rescue squad in Maryland; or must be actively engaged as a volunteer firefighter or ambulance rescue squad member in an organized fire department or ambulance or rescue squad in Maryland. Applicants must provide proof of official acceptance in a program of fire service technology, emergency medical technology, fire service management, or public safety administration with a minor or concentration in fire service technology or fire service management; and also submit a completed notarized form from an eligible employer confirming active employment or volunteer service. Maryland Higher Education Commission Senatorial Scholarship

The Maryland Senatorial Scholarship is offered to students who plan to pursue a postsecondary credential at a two-year or four-year college, university, or private career school. Full-time students may receive a scholarship for a total of four years, and part-time students may receive a scholarship for a total of eight years. Applicants and their parents (if they are a dependent student) must be Maryland residents. Applicants must take the SAT 1 or the ACT unless they have graduated from high school five or more years ago, have earned 24 college credit hours, or are attending a community college or a private career school. All in-state majors are eligible. Award recipients may use this scholarship at an out-of-state school if their major is not available at any Maryland institution and if their legislator agrees. The scholarship may also be used out-of-state if the student is disabled and studying at an institution outside the state that makes special provisions for disabled students that are not available to the applicant at an institution in Maryland. A recipient may hold a scholarship for a fifth undergraduate academic year or for a semester subsequent to the end of a fourth undergraduate academic year if the recipient has requested a scholarship from the Senator for a fifth undergraduate academic year or for a semester subsequent to the end of a fourth undergraduate academic year; is a full-time student; continues to be a resident of the state; continues to be a student at the institution and takes courses leading to a degree; and has exhausted the funds available under the Senatorial Scholarship. Applicants may either submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if they are eligible for in-state tuition, but if they are ineligible to receive federal financial aid, applicants must submit the Maryland Higher Education Commission One-App application instead. Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship

MANTS, an association formed from the state nursery and landscape associations of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, has established this scholarship with the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) with the belief that the strength and future success of the horticulture industry lies in the solid education of today's students. Through this scholarship, MANTS will provide scholarship opportunities to qualified students to help ensure the continuity of the nursery and landscape profession. Attendance at an institution within the MANTS member states is not mandatory. Applicants must have at least a junior standing in a four-year curriculum or senior standing in a two-year curriculum as of the fall semester of scholarship application year. Applicants must be enrolled in good standing. Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.7, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their major. Preference will be given to applicants who plan to work within the industry (including nursery operation; landscape architecture, design, construction, or maintenance; interiorscape; horticultural distribution; or retail garden center) following graduation. Previous Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship award winners are eligible for additional funding and may reapply for the scholarship. Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation. Army Spouses' Club of the Greater Washington Area Scholarshi

Each year ASCGWA awards merit-based scholarships to high school graduating seniors, college students, and military spouses living in the National Capital Region. For children of ASCGWA members, who are currently attending a post-secondary institution in a degree program and may be eligible for an ASCGWA Scholarship, they must be college students planning to continue to attend such post-secondary institutions as full-time students for the 2023-2024 school year. High school seniors must be planning to attend a post-secondary institution in a degree program as full-time students for the 2023-2024 school year. For ASCGWA members and/or spouses of ASCGWA members, they must attend or plan to attend an undergraduate or graduate program, either full-time or part-time. The applicant or the applicant's parent or the applicant's spouse must be an active member of ASCGWA prior to November 30, 2022, before the application is submitted. Douglas J.J. Peters Veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq Conflic

The Douglas J.J. Peters Veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts Scholarship Program is designed to provide financial assistance to United States armed forces personnel who served in the Afghanistan or Iraq Conflicts, and their son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter, or spouse. Current deployments are not eligible for the scholarship. Applicants must have been accepted for admission or enrolled in a regular undergraduate program at an eligible institution, or be accepted for admission or enrolled in a 2-year terminal certificate program in which the course work is acceptable for transfer credit for an accredited baccalaureate program at an eligible institution. If a spouse of a veteran, a marriage certificate must be submitted. The DD214 military orders or other official documentation must clearly indicate service in Afghanistan or Iraq or contiguous waters or air space and include the dates of service. While the FAFSA is not required, if the applicant chooses to file the FAFSA it must be completed by March 1 priority deadline or before June 1, 2024. Awards are made annually, with renewal applicants given first priority. Eligible applicants who are veterans shall be given priority over dependent biological sons or daughters; or spouses. Awards may be held for up to five years if a full-time student or eight years if a part-time student. What types of scholarships are available for students?
Need-based scholarships
These are scholarships for students who have demonstrated a financial need. There’s no universal number or set income level that tells you if you qualify. How each scholarship defines what financial need means varies. The federal government as well as specific organizations, corporations, and colleges/universities/schools offer need-based scholarships.
Merit scholarships
Merit scholarships are for students who have shown high academic, athletic, or extracurricular achievement over their high school careers. Not all schools/colleges offer merit-aid—highly selective schools typically don’t. The process for applying for merit scholarships varies. For merit scholarships offered through colleges and universities, you generally don’t have to do anything other than complete the application to the school itself. For some schools, you need to submit the FAFSA® to be eligible.
Career-specific grants or scholarships
These are awarded to students who know they want a career in a specific industry. Maybe they know they want to be a teacher, a nurse, or an engineer. To be eligible for grants, students must submit the FAFSA®. To find career-specific scholarships, try searching for your major and “association.”
Community or nonprofit scholarships
Nonprofit and community organizations often receive funding from donors to create scholarship programs for students who need them.
Tips for successful scholarship applications
- Pull together everything you need for the application including transcripts, so you can submit a complete scholarship application.
- You may need a recommendation letter or letters for a scholarship. Ask a teacher, employer, or someone else who knows you to write one for you—and be sure to give them enough time to do it.
- If you’re writing a scholarship essay, follow the prompt, answer the essay question completely, and write from your experience. A few well-written essays that you can reuse for different scholarship applications can really pay off.
- Highlight your strengths and achievements in your application.
- Talk about your financial need and what you would use the scholarship money for if you won. How would it help?
- Have to interview for a scholarship? Dress to impress in a professional outfit. And do your research! Look into how/why the scholarship was created. Try to bring up why it’s meaningful to you. Also, don’t forget to send a thank-you note afterwards.
- Keep track of all the deadlines for the scholarships you’re applying to. If you miss one, they may not extend the due date.
- Apply for scholarships year after year, all through college. As you continue your studies, gain more experience, and try new extracurricular activities in college, you might be eligible for more scholarships you weren’t originally qualified for.
