L. Phil and Alice J. Wicker Scholarship

The L. Phil and Alice J. Wicker Scholarship will be awarded to those with active General Class license or higher. Eligible fields of study are bachelor's degree or higher in electronics, communications, or related fields. The applicant must be holding an amateur radio license for at least one year. Transcripts must include all semesters for which grades have been awarded. If the student is applying for graduate school assistance, high school transcripts are not necessary. North Carolina Sheriffs' Association Undergraduate Criminal

The North Carolina Sheriffs' Association (NCSA) created the Criminal Justice Scholarship Program to assist students who are dependents of law enforcement officials or who are studying in the criminal justice field and express an interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement. Applicants must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours in a degree granting criminal justice program at one of the institutions of The University of North Carolina or the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. Applicants must express an interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement and must be recommended by their local sheriff. One nominee for the scholarship is chosen each year by the financial aid office at each eligible college or university. Applications must be approved and signed by the financial aid official at the college or university. The Financial Aid Official will mail the chosen application(s) to either NCSEAA or NCICU. Other eligible institutions are Salem College, Campbell University, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Shaw University, Catawba College, Livingston College, St. Augustine's University, Chowan University, Mars Hill University, University of Mount Olive, Gardner-Webb University, Meredith College, William Peace University, Greensboro College, Methodist University, Wingate University, Guilford College, and Montreat College. Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship

The Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship will be awarded to deserving students who plan to pursue teaching in the public schools for North Carolina. Applicants must be enrolled or plan to enroll in a teacher-education program. Applicants must be in their junior year of college or a senior in high school and willing to teach in NC Public schools for at least two years following graduation. Preference may be given to: NC Teacher Cadet students, Future Teachers of America members, SNCAE or Aspiring Educator members, and children and grandchildren of North Carolina Association of Educators members. Other selection criteria include character, diversity, scholastic achievement, evidence of promise as a teacher, and the financial need of the applicant. The North Carolina Community College Grant Program will be awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and are enrolled at North Carolina community colleges. Students must enroll for at least six credit hours per semester in a curriculum program and meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the institution. Eligibility is based on a calculation of need, using data from the FAFSA. Students with EFCs of 8,500 or less are eligible. The FAFSA opens on October 1. The Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors from a 14-county area of North Carolina. Applicants must demonstrate financial need as determined by the application process; and have Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Expected Family Contribution (EFC) that does not exceed the maximum permitted by the Program. Of the 17 scholarships, one is awarded to a student from the areas of Greensboro and High Point and to a senior at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics who is from an eligible county. Additional criteria include merit, leadership, character, and the desire of the recipient to prepare for a career as a useful and informed citizen. American Legion Department of North Carolina High School Ora

Each year The Department of North Carolina joins the 54 other departments and the over 10,000 local posts in The American Legion High School Oratorical Contest. Each District will conduct an Oratorical Contest for high school students in grades 9-12, including those homeschooled in your school districts. Speech must be student's original work on the general subject of the Constitution. Speech contests begin in December at local Legion post level and continue on to the national competition.
North Carolina Veterans Scholarships Class I-A

The North Carolina Veterans Scholarships Class I-A will be awarded to a student with a veteran parent who was killed or died in wartime service or died as a result of service-connected condition incurred in wartime service as defined by law. This scholarship may be used for four academic years if used within 8 years. A transcript of high school grades through junior year is required if the applicant is a senior in high school and doesn't have senior grades. If the applicant graduated high school, they must provide a complete transcript of high school grades. A copy of the applicant's birth certificate showing the name of their veteran parent must also be submitted. A copy of the applicant's veteran parent's DD 214 is also required. Two completed NCDMVA-23B(3) forms or recommendation forms must be submitted. At least one recommendation must be from a teacher, guidance counselor, professor or academic counselor. Some of the required materials must be submitted if it meets the certain criteria. North Carolina Veterans Scholarships Class III

The North Carolina Veterans Scholarships Class III will be awarded to students who will meet one of the following: (A) have a veteran parent who is or was at time of death drawing pension for total and permanent disability as rated by the USDVA; (B) have a veteran parent who is a deceased war veteran who was honorably discharged and who does not qualify under any other provision within this statute; or (C) served in a combat zone or waters adjacent to a combat zone and received a campaign badge or medal and who does not qualify under any other provision with this statute. Students in public, community and technical colleges or institutes will receive free tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees set forth in the law. Students in private college and junior colleges will receive $7,000 per nine-month academic year. The scholarship may be renewed for four academic years if used within 8 years. Two recommendations must be submitted, at least one recommendation must be from a teacher, guidance counselor, professor, or academic counselor. What types of scholarships are available for students?
Need-based scholarships
These are scholarships for students who have demonstrated a financial need. There’s no universal number or set income level that tells you if you qualify. How each scholarship defines what financial need means varies. The federal government as well as specific organizations, corporations, and colleges/universities/schools offer need-based scholarships.
Merit scholarships
Merit scholarships are for students who have shown high academic, athletic, or extracurricular achievement over their high school careers. Not all schools/colleges offer merit-aid—highly selective schools typically don’t. The process for applying for merit scholarships varies. For merit scholarships offered through colleges and universities, you generally don’t have to do anything other than complete the application to the school itself. For some schools, you need to submit the FAFSA® to be eligible.
Career-specific grants or scholarships
These are awarded to students who know they want a career in a specific industry. Maybe they know they want to be a teacher, a nurse, or an engineer. To be eligible for grants, students must submit the FAFSA®. To find career-specific scholarships, try searching for your major and “association.”
Community or nonprofit scholarships
Nonprofit and community organizations often receive funding from donors to create scholarship programs for students who need them.
Tips for successful scholarship applications
- Pull together everything you need for the application including transcripts, so you can submit a complete scholarship application.
- You may need a recommendation letter or letters for a scholarship. Ask a teacher, employer, or someone else who knows you to write one for you—and be sure to give them enough time to do it.
- If you’re writing a scholarship essay, follow the prompt, answer the essay question completely, and write from your experience. A few well-written essays that you can reuse for different scholarship applications can really pay off.
- Highlight your strengths and achievements in your application.
- Talk about your financial need and what you would use the scholarship money for if you won. How would it help?
- Have to interview for a scholarship? Dress to impress in a professional outfit. And do your research! Look into how/why the scholarship was created. Try to bring up why it’s meaningful to you. Also, don’t forget to send a thank-you note afterwards.
- Keep track of all the deadlines for the scholarships you’re applying to. If you miss one, they may not extend the due date.
- Apply for scholarships year after year, all through college. As you continue your studies, gain more experience, and try new extracurricular activities in college, you might be eligible for more scholarships you weren’t originally qualified for.
